The quavering voice and acoustic guitar trappings of Taylor Armstrong fit the established aesthetic for sensitive, bedsit singer/songwriters of the millennial generation. But a listen to the lyrics of songs like “I’m Remembering,” “Tender” and “Teach Me How to Love You More” suggest an unexpected force at play: a deeply felt but decidedly nontraditional Christian faith.

Armstrong took a somewhat circuitous path to spiritual music. Born in 1991 and raised between the Canadian province of New Brunswick and rural Maine, this step-son of a pastor, lived a quiet life dotted by hardship and tragedy, including the loss of his mother as a teenager. Frustrated by his inability to relate to the contemporary Christian music industry, he came to the conclusion that his destiny to convey a sacred message laid elsewhere.

He began recording and releasing music in 2016 with the worship EP First Love, offering stirring, acoustic DIY productions on tracks like “Teach Me How to Love You More.” Armstrong's commitment to going against the grain of traditional contemporary Christian sounds was apparent on the 2019 singles “Tender,” a sensuous ballad, and “Come What May,” a wedding-ready duet with singer Sarah Juers. He released a self-titled EP in 2020, featuring the well-streamed “Altar,” but his next work threw another curveball: 2021’s Moonflower was an album of secular pop inspired by a romantic relationship that ended shortly before the album was released. The album has since been taken down off all streaming services.

Within the year, Armstrong about-faced into modern worship songs, releasing singles like “I’m Remembering” and the contemplative “Chasing After Wind,” written around the time his father was dying of cancer. 2024 was a prolific stretch for the singer, balancing West Coast tours with a pair of new releases, and album called “When It Rains” and the country-tinged EP “The Coal.” The same year, he got married and moved from the San Diego area to just outside Portland, Oregon. He has since been touring with Josh Garrels in 2026 as a support artists for his Ancient Doors Tour, as well as recording music for other artists, & working on his new album set for release in 2027.
